Overuse Injuries of the Elbow
Various injuries can occur from overuse of the elbow.
- Medial epicondylitis (Golfer’s elbow), repetitive flexion (forehand shots) or idiopathic manifesting as pain near the medial epicondyle of the elbow.
- Lateral epicondylitis, (Tennis elbow), repetitive extension (backhand shots) or idiopathic manifesting as pain near the lateral epicondyle of the elbow.
- Ulnar nerve entrapment at the elbow is the second most common neuropathy in the upper extremity. Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow is aggravated by flexion of the elbow, leading to compression and traction of the nerve, triggering pain.
Symptoms
Ulnar nerve entrapment typically start with numbness, tingling and weakness in the hand in the distribution of the nerve covering the entire fifth digit and ulnar half of the fourth digit.
